Summertown by The Mayflies USA: This 1999 CD was re-released on vinyl just last year — yep, in 2012 — and it still makes a great combination of Americana, 1960s rock, and power pop.

Spin magazine said Summertown is: “”r-o-c-k like they don’t make anymore, in love with early Eagles and Bob Welch, in bed with Wilco but dreaming of the Replacements and Pure Prairie League and proud of it.”

The summer in Summertown by The Mayflies USA:

The tracks “Summertown” and “NYC” deal directly with summertime, although in a downer kind of way, while the upbeat “Just for Fun” could be on a school’s-out playlist with “Constructive Summer” by The Hold Steady and “Mississippi Moon” by King’s X.

“Ariel” is set “in the back of a bar / on the edge of the town by the sea,” which brings the beach to mind.
